Chapter 9: “A Break in the Chain”
Summary: Sherlock gets in disguise and goes out to find his own results when nothing else turns up. He wires the police inspector to meet him. Then he returns in disguise, tricking both the policeman and Watson, and they have dinner together before going out to catch the bad guys.
Reaction: Disguises! Yay! Another favorite part of these stories. I love that he tricks his own friend too.
Why This Book Is a Classic: Travel by carriage/cart is like the city bus. It takes both half an hour plus to get across town in what would take a car probably 5 minutes (as long as it’s not rush hour or anything).
Detective Story Convention: Disguises! Every good detective must be a master of disguise, and Sherlock is clearly a master.
