Chapter 8: “The Baker Street Irregulars”
Summary: Toby and Sherlock follow a new trail, which leads them to a ferryman’s house. Sherlock decides that the little guy who’d helped with the murder is a tiny savage/cannibal.
Reaction: Wow, cannibals; these books have it all! And the barrels of creosote are for seasoning wood, Sherlock says.
Why This Book Is a Classic: Cannibals! Modern books don’t feature cannibals nearly as often. Too bad 🙂
Detective Story Convention: Newspaper stories siding with the police and putting popular opinion against our detective. It’s happened in both stories so far, and I’ve seen it elsewhere. Up the drama by pitting the world against our hero.
