Chapter 49: “Dutiful Friendship”
Summary: It is Mrs. Bagnet’s birthday, the biggest holiday in the Bagnet family. Mr. George comes by, but is not himself. He says that he’s upset because of Jo’s death. Then Mr. Bucket drops in and charms the lot of them. When Mr. George leaves, Mr. Bucket follows him and only then tells him he’s really there to arrest him for Mr. Tulkinghorn’s murder, which he does.
Reaction: Oh, Mr. Bucket, you are such a great character, and I still like you even if you scare Jo to death (literally) and arrest poor Mr. George. But Mr. George is tough. He’ll be fine.
Prediction: Again, Mr. George is tough. He’ll be fine. I’m sure Mr. Bucket will find the real culprit.
Why This Book Is a Classic: Classic murder investigation. I don’t think any modern detectives work like Detective Mr. Bucket.
Our Lesson: Don’t get in debt to bad guys like Mr. Tulkinghorn, because if they’re murdered you’ll be suspect #1.
